Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport in which a wide variety of fighting techniques are used, including Striking and Grappling. The events are held in a 30' MMA Cage to ensure the safety of the athletes while competing.

Modern Mixed Martial Arts tournaments as a popular phenomenon emerged in 1993 with the Ultimate Fighting Championships, based on the concept of pitting different fighting styles against each other in competition with minimal rules in place, in an attempt to determine which system would be more effective in a real, unregulated combat situation. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, mixed martial arts events implemented additional rules for the safety of the athletes and to promote acceptance of the sport, while maintaining as much of the original no-holds-barred concept as possible. Since these changes, the sport has grown rapidly, to the point of setting pay-per-view records.

The history of the MMA event can be traced to the Gracie Family's Vale Tudo martial arts tournaments in Brazil starting in the 1920's. The fighting concept of combining various combat disciplines gained popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s with the emergence of Bruce Lee and his theories of mixing various martial art styles in a form called Jeet Kune Do. The sport gained international exposure and widespread publicity in the United States in 1993, when Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter Royce Gracie dominated the Ultimate Fighting Championships, sparking a revolution in the martial arts, while in Japan the continued interest in the sport resulted in the creation of the Pride Fighting Championships in 1997.

Today, Mixed Martial Arts is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and has spawned professional leagues such as the (UFC) Ultimate Fighting Championships, the (IFL) International Fight League, (WEC) World Extreme Combat, (Elite XC) Elite Extreme Combat and many more. MMA has also hit mainstream television through the hit Spike TV reality show "The Ultimate Fighter" awarding pro fighters the chance to win a six figure contract with the UFC. In states all across the country amature MMA events have become a frequent event featuring hungry beginner athletes trying to get their big break into the Pro MMA scene.

MMA is also currently playing a huge roll the the development of our US Military's Hand To Hand Combat Programs such as the US Army's "Modern Army Combatives Program" and the US Marines "Marine Core Martial Arts Program". The Caged Arena of MMA has become a testing grounds for the military to investigate the most effective combative tactics to be taught to soldiers. Some MMA schools have even become the facility in which the soldiers are sent to to learn the Combatives Programs, such as Odyssey Martial Arts Academy which is officially recognized by the US Army as a certified school in Virginia to award Combative Certification to soldiers.

Combatives Training

Mixed Martial Arts will continue to evolve and provide the world with realistic tactics for people to educate themselves on. The process of evolution never ends.
